Suzuki's newly revised, 2010 SX4 compact crossover hatchback continues the successful legacy of the outgoing model. But importantly, it now offers the additional appeal of a choice between front and all-wheel drive versions. In the case of the front-wheel drive derivatives, purchasers can also choose between a six-speed manual gearbox, or a Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT).

Along with the fresh new look, and enhanced performance of the efficient new 112 kW 2,0-litre engine, the SX4 also features an even higher level of standard specification across all three models. This adds further credence to Suzuki's philosophy of providing exceptional value for money, and an ownership experience that's second to none.

The launch of the SX4 AWD certainly provides an even more alluring drawcard for buyers seeking a practical, family-sized vehicle with some of the all-terrain capability of a sports utility vehicle. This includes the reassurance of an electronically selectable four-wheel drive system ideally suited to a variety of driving conditions, as well as the benefit of a raised suspension and a commanding driving position.

However, the compact dimensions, small turning circle, practical five-door configuration and brisk performance traits align it equally with the requirements of the family hatch owner, ensuring that this SX4 is able to offer the best of both worlds. SUZUKI SX4 2.0 FWD The updated Suzuki SX4 range starts off with the front-wheel drive SX4 derivative.

This model is available with the choice of an entirely new six-speed manual gearbox, or with Suzuki's advanced continuously variable transmission (CVT), which supersedes the four-speed automatic gearbox used previously. The innovative CVT delivers seamless performance, with commensurate benefits in terms of performance and economy.

It also offers the option of six 'virtual' ratios for added driver control and interaction. These virtual ‘gears’ are selected via sporty shift paddles behind the leather-trimmed steering wheel, or via the gear lever’s sequential shift action. Standard specification for the updated SX4 has shifted this versatile lifestyle hatchback even further upmarket. For instance, the list now includes a more luxurious and comfortable grade of trim for the door panels and seats, while the door armrests have been fitted with additional padding.

The integrated switches on the steering wheel for the audio and cruise control systems are now illuminated for improved visibility, while an entirely new instrument cluster is also part of the MY2010 upgrade. This cluster incorporates a multi-function display that cycles a digital clock, outside temperature gauge, fuel consumption gauge and a driving range indicator at the push of a button. CVT-equipped models also feature a gear indicator.

Suzuki’s Keyless Entry and Start system has been retained, and still ensures exceptional entry and exit convenience. The luxury equipment list also includes electric windows and mirrors, fully automatic climate control (accessed via a new control panel for greater ease of use), power steering and cruise control. The SX4's superb audio system has been enhanced with an additional dashboard-mounted centre speaker to complement the previous eight-speaker configuration. This makes the most of the MP3 CD playback functionality and speed-sensing volume control.

An impressive level of safety continues to be a hallmark of the latest Suzuki SX4 range. All models boast a full complement of dual front SRS airbags, side airbags incorporated into the front seats for maximum protection, as well as full-length curtain airbags. Dual integrated ISOFIX child seat anchorages, with additional tether points, are provided to ensure easy fitment of suitably equipped child seats, in the interests of protecting the young ones in the event of an impact. ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (EBA) for the all-disc braking system ensures optimum stopping performance in all conditions. Practicality continues to be a major attraction of the SX4 – both for everyday use and for more adventurous lifestyles.

It features a wide array of useful storage compartments, along with 60:40 split folding rear seats that increase the standard luggage capacity from 253 to a capacious 992 litres. There’s also an under-seat tray on the passenger's side, a choice of front and rear cup holders, and beverage bottle holders in each of the door pockets. SUZUKI SX4 2.0 AWD The headline attraction of the updated SX4 range is undoubtedly the new all-wheel drive (AWD) addition to the line-up.

The newcomer provides the genuine all-terrain ability expressed by its adventurous styling. Suzuki's intelligent All-Wheel Drive (i-AWD) system normally operates in front-wheel drive mode for optimal performance and fuel consumption. However, the driver is able to select the electronically activated 4WD Auto mode when driving on unpredictable roads with varying surfaces, while the 4WD Lock modes affords even greater control and maximum traction.

In line with its active nature, the SX4 AWD derivative is only available with the new six-speed manual gearbox. It benefits from the addition of an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) for the highest levels of active driving safety. The rest of the standard equipment package matches the very high standard provided by the front-wheel drive SX4 derivatives, ensuring that its dynamic versatility is linked to identical levels of safety, comfort and convenience.

Delivering an unrivalled combination of adventurous style, abundant space and hatchback practicality, Suzuki's pioneering SX4 lifestyle hatchback is ideally placed to lead the way in the rapidly growing crossover sector. In general, the perennially popular SUV sector has come under increasing pressure due to social, environmental and economic factors. At the same time, there has been a shift in demand towards more compact, fuel efficient and eco-friendly options.

Not surprisingly, demand for innovative, crossover motoring solutions that address these concerns has increased substantially – and the Suzuki SX4 is a perfect example of a compact, intelligently packaged crossover vehicle with strong lifestyle appeal. For the 2010 model year, Suzuki’s dynamic crossover breaks new ground with the addition of a brand-new all-wheel drive version that adds genuine all-terrain capability to theSX4 formula for the first time. At the same time, the entire model range has undergone a series of improvements, designed to boost this alluring, innovative all-rounder’s aesthetic appeal and dynamic prowess.

Thus, the 2010 SX4 is even more of a crowd-pleaser than before, thanks to its array of cosmetic and detail improvements. These conspire to convey a greater level of upmarket elegance, enhanced comfort and sporting appeal, while retaining the crossover’s engaging, individual personality. The most obvious change is at the front, where a sophisticated new mesh-type grille takes pride of place. The result is an SX4 with a more refined air of sophistication.

The updated Suzuki SX4 now comes equipped with new 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels featuring a striking five-spoke design. These add a more contoured, more athletic edge to the hatchback’s overall appearance. With an emphasis on distinctively upmarket quality and comfort, the interior has been treated to a raft of revisions, too. The instrument cluster has been given an entirely new look through the use of effective light-emitting diode (LED) technology. This is complemented by bolder and more elegant dials that not only underline the SX4’s more upmarket execution, but also improve legibility.

There's also a revised information display incorporating a digital clock, an outside temperature display, a fuel consumption gauge, and a travel range indicator. CVT versions get a gear position indicator. Ease of use is a key theme of the interior updates. For instance, the user interface of the automatic climate control system has been completely redesigned, in the interests of more intuitive operation. The upgraded sound system features a CD tuner with MP3 music file compatibility and speed-sensing volume control is standard. The loudspeaker component consists of separate tweeters and mid/bass drivers in each of the front and rear doors, for a total of eight speakers. The ninth loudspeaker is a centre channel, mounted in the dashboard, for peerless multichannel audio performance.

Ongoing feedback from customers has resulted in backlighting being added to the steering wheel-mounted switchgear for the audio system and cruise control, in the interests of more convenient operation in low light or after dark. Higher-quality seat materials are featured on the new models, along with revised door trims. Additional padding for the armrests has upped the levels of comfort and luxury even further. A centre armrest for each front seat has been added, too. Extensive noise-cutting measures have realised further gains in driving comfort. In terms of the powertrain, this includes larger engine undercover insulation, an improved prop-shaft damper and a new shift-device cover.

Under the skin, the monocoque chassis has also undergone important refinements. Changes introduced by Suzuki’s development engineers have increased component rigidity and improved internal materials. These measures yield more efficient noise insulation and noise absorption properties, thereby keeping engine and external noise out of the cabin more effectively than before.
