Although focussed on the budget end of the market, the Alto carries a highly impressive level of standard features. These not only contribute to comfort and convenience, but also boost occupant safety.

The two-model range caters for two distinct categories of buyers. The GL is ideally placed to satisfy those who need a city car offering modern, high standards of safety, fuel economy and manoeuvrability, while expressing exceptional overall value.

By comparison, the high-spec GLS adopts the same concept, but adds an attractive spread of luxury, convenience and aesthetic highlights that distinguish it as a trend-setting city car with sophisticated appeal.

This makes it the perfect choice for discerning buyers demanding a feature-packed and enjoyable driving experience. At the same time, it ticks all the right boxes in terms of fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility, as well as overall value for money.

Alto GL

Despite the Alto GL's entry-level status, it offers an impressive level of specification. From a safety perspective, the inclusion of dual front airbags is a valuable life-saving addition.

These are bolstered by side impact protection beams in the doors, as well as front seatbelts equipped with pre-tensioners and force limiters. Dual ISOFIX child seat anchorage points with top tethers are also provided at the rear.

Vehicle security is enhanced with a factory-fitted immobiliser, and an easily visible VIN number for easy identification.

Electric power steering is fitted as standard, making the most of the car's compact dimensions and 9,0 m turning circle to guarantee exceptional agility and manoeuvrability.

Air-conditioning (with an integrated pollen filter) is a welcome addition, being the exception rather than the norm in this price-sensitive segment.

Additionally, the GL boasts a pre-installed roof-mounted antenna, making aftermarket fitment of a CD receiver a simple affair.

Two-speed windscreen wipers with intermittent function are standard, as is a rear-window wash-wipe and demister, a digital clock, manual remote adjustment for the door mirrors, and a remote fuel flap opener.

The 14-inch steel wheels (including a full-size spare) are fitted with 155/65 R14 tyres and finished off with full-sized wheel caps. Tinted glass is standard fare, as are halogen headlights.

Practicality ranks high too, with the provision of a 12-volt interior accessory socket, one-piece folding bench seat, a large number of useful storage compartments, and drinks holders front and rear.

Alto GLS

Verifying its upmarket positioning, the striking Alto GLS gains an attractive selection of distinguishing exterior features, including 14-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps and colour-coded door handles and mirrors.

Convenient access is facilitated by means of remote-controlled central locking, while the list of extra interior features extends to tilt adjustment for the steering wheel, front electric windows, a rev counter and a flexible 50:50 split seatback for the folding rear seat.

A fully-featured audio system is fitted, encompassing an MP3-compatible CD receiver with FM stereo and AM bands, linked to a total of six speakers positioned in the front and rear door trims, along with tweeters in the instrument panel.

For convenience, remote releases for the fuel filler flap and the rear tailgate are provided on the floor to the right of the driver’s seat.

Active driving safety is given further impetus by means of standard ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (EBA).

The Alto GL retails for R104 900, while the Alto GLS has a R119 900 price tag. Both models benefit from a three-year/100 000 km warranty.
